JOURNALS-articleLarge (1)Jeffrey Beall and Carolyn Yucha will present the opening session on Open Access or Good Editors Stand Out in a World of Predatory Publishers. Jeffrey is an academic librarian at the Auraria Library, University of Colorado Denver. He maintains a list of predatory publishers and journals at his blog, Scholarly Open Access. Jeff has had some recent notoriety when the OMICS Publishing Group (publishers on his list) threatened him with a $1 billion lawsuit for his criticism of the company. He is becoming the “go to” person on predatory practices and was recently featured in the New York Times as well as a podcast with NPR’s Bob Garfield.

yuchaCarolyn Yucha, Dean of the College of Nursing, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Editor-in-Chief of Biological Research for Nursing went undercover at an OMICS conference in December, 2013. She’ll be reporting back with first hand information on what exactly goes on at one of these “predatory” events.

This is sure to be a lively and entertaining start of INANE 2014!

9:30 am to 10 am: Break and Networking

10:00 to 11 am: Interactive Workshop on Open Access Issues for Editors and Publishers – Atlantic Room

Building on the presentation from the first hour, Jeffrey Beall and Carolyn Yucha will moderate an interactive session on Open Access Issues for Editors and Publishers. Using the case study format, participants will work in groups to discuss issues around open access and formulate effective strategies to deal with these problems. The case study/discussion format is popular with INANE attendees and has long been used to discuss ethical issues. We are confident the Jeffrey and Carolyn will foster a lively and spirited discussion on open access concerns that are confronting editors every day.
